Gayle Robinson, Store Owner/Director
Gayle Robinson is 3rd generation owner of Robinson's Outdoor Store, est. by her grandfather in 1929. With over 30 years of retail experience, Gayle is proud to be a leader in Victoria and to revive a landmark family business. She is President and founder of ThinkLocalFirst, a nonprofit society dedicated to educating the public on the 10% shift & the importance of buying local.
She led Robinson’s to win the 2008 CAFÉ Business of the Year and 2009 GVCC Business of the Year & Outstanding Customer Service Award. Robinson’s won the GVCC 2012 awards for Employee of the Year and was finalist for Outstanding Customer Service.
Gayle is an avid adventure traveler who has trekked the Inca Trail in Peru, the Annapurna in Nepal, cycled in Italy, hiked the Grand Canyon and trekked in Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. Gayle and her daughter Erin, who is working in the store as 4th generation trekked the Tsum Valley in Nepal and just returned from trekking in Peru and the Amazon.
Gayle has completed the purchase of the building that Robinson’s is in, and is marking Robinson’s 86th Anniversary this year. She is travelling to Provence this October to celebrate her 60th birthday in style.
Matt King, General Manager
Matt King has been with Robinson’s for the past 18 years and in the industry since he was 14. Considered one of the Northwest’s most innovative tiers, Matt’s fly patterns have been featured in numerous fly fishing magazines, international journals, books such as Jim Schollmeyer’s Trout Flies of the West and Patent Patterns. They have also been exhibited at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, and are auctioned annually at the Pacific Salmon Foundation Benefit Gala.
Since moving to British Columbia, Matt has spent considerable time in pursuit of Pacific Salmon, Steelhead and Trout and enjoys creating new and innovative fly patterns.
Nick Boston, Hard Goods Buyer
Nick was raised on the island with a passion for the outdoors. This passion has sent him around the world in pursuit of adventure. Nick spent a number of seasons in whistler, before traveling around South East Asia. His most recent adventure found him in Central America. When not traveling, nick can be found hiking, fly fishing, and paddling around Canada.

Dave Keay, Soft Goods Buyer
Dave is originally from Ontario. Since moving to the Coast he has spends his days off exploring the many trails around Vancouver Island. His most recent trip was to the remote Nootka trail. Dave enjoys backpacking and hiking. He is very knowledgeable around boots, clothing, and packs.
Erin is originally from Victoria but spent the last 6 years living in Montreal. Now that she's back on the island she enjoys hiking in Strathcona Park and doing trips like Della Falls, King's Peak and Elk River Trail. Erin and Gayle have also travelled to Nepal and Peru together and have done presentations in the store to help gear people up and share their travel experiences.
Mary McConnell, Warranty and Special Orders
Mary is an expat from Southern Ontario who since moving to Vancouver Island has been getting outside as much as possible. From Tofino to Strathcona and the Juan de Fuca trail. She's an environment loving yogi, practicing her shivasanas after surfrider beach clean ups.
Jack Marcotte, Information Management & Receiving
Jack was born and raised in Victoria, BC. He joined the team at Robinson’s as a data entry clerk, tasked with the job of entering all of the merchandise into their fancy new computer system and has since gotten some gear and headed outdoors. Now he has his own tent, sleeping bag and daypack and enjoys camping trips every now and then with fellow co-workers. After getting the initial data entry job he was asked to stay on to do receiving and maintaining the point of sale system.
Jo grew up hiking on the North Shore and later on in the Kootenays. Before moving to the island, she spent many years paddling, exploring and photographing the coast of Nova Scotia. Most recent travels include trekking in Northern India, Vietnam and Cambodia. She looks forward to many more travels, both locally and internationally.
Elliott was born in Southern Ontario. He comes from a rock climbing as well as canoe tripping background. He has paddled extensively across Ontario including Algonquin Park, Temagami, Kipawa (Quebec), and the French River. He spent the past few years climbing until an injury forced an early retirement from the sport. Since living on the island he has put away the canoe & cams and spends most of his free time in the mountains scrambling and trail running.
Gabrielle was born and raised on Vancouver island. She grew up camping through BC with her family and playing softball for Sooke. An adventure tourism graduate from the West Coast Adventure College. She spent the last summer working as a zipline guide before joining the Robinson's team. She enjoys day hiking in the Sooke hills, hanging with her cat, over nights at Sombrio, and climbing on her days off. She's passionate about the environment, especially the forests of BC. She solo'd the Juan De Fuca trail in September and is currently planning to hike the North Coast trail in April.
